Akshay Kumar was born into a Punjabi Hindu family in Amritsar. His father, Hari Om Bhatia, was an army officer who later became an accountant with UNICEF. His family moved to Mumbai, where he grew up in the Punjabi-dominated area of Koliwada. He attended Don Bosco High School and later enrolled at Guru Nanak Khalsa College, but his disinterest in academics led him to drop out.

His true passion lay in martial arts. After obtaining a black belt in Taekwondo in India, he persuaded his father to send him to Bangkok for advanced training in Muay Thai, a form of Thai boxing. To make ends meet in Thailand, he worked various jobs, including as a chef and waiter. This period of his life was marked by struggle and discipline, which would later define his professional work ethic.

Upon returning to Mumbai, he started a martial arts school. It was through a student—who happened to be a photographer's assistant—that he was introduced to the world of modeling. He earned more money from his first two-day modeling assignment than his entire month's salary as a martial arts instructor. He worked as an assistant to a photographer for 18 months without pay to build his portfolio before making his official film debut.
