Demetria Devonne Lovato was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and raised in Dallas, Texas. Their mother, Dianna De La Garza, was a former Dallas Cowboys cheerleader and musician, and their father, Patrick Martin Lovato, was an engineer and musician. Lovato has an older sister, Dallas, and a younger maternal half-sister, actress Madison De La Garza. They faced significant bullying in school, which led them to be homeschooled and later inspired her advocacy against bullying.

Lovato began their career as a child actor on the children's television series Barney & Friends from 2002 to 2004, where they met fellow future star Selena Gomez. Their career took off when they were cast as the lead role of Mitchie Torres in the 2008 Disney Channel musical film Camp Rock. The film's soundtrack featured the hit song "This Is Me," which launched Lovato's music career and garnered them widespread recognition. She then starred in her own Disney Channel series, Sonny with a Chance, from 2009 to 2011.
