Sukhwinder Singh was born on July 18, 1971, in Amritsar, Punjab, into a Sikh family with a deep connection to music. His father, Manak Singh, was a renowned Punjabi folk singer. Sukhwinder's musical talent was evident from a very young age, and he began performing on stage at the tender age of eight. He received formal training in music from Professor B.S. Narang.

His early career was marked by struggle and a desire to refine his craft. He initially released a Punjabi album, Munda Southhall Da, and even worked as a music arranger for the legendary duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal. However, he felt that his voice was missing something and decided to take a sabbatical from Mumbai. He embarked on a world tour, traveling to England and America to listen to and understand different forms of music, which broadened his musical horizons.

Sukhwinder's first major break in Bollywood came with the song "Aaja Sanam" from the 1991 film Khilaaf, but it went largely unnoticed. His career-defining moment arrived seven years later with the song "Chaiyya Chaiyya" from the film Dil Se.. (1998). Composed by the maestro A.R. Rahman, the song, famously shot on a moving train with Shah Rukh Khan, became a nationwide and international phenomenon. It not only brought Sukhwinder immense fame but also earned him his first Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer.

This collaboration with A.R. Rahman proved to be a turning point, leading to more iconic hits and a strong professional relationship.

His most significant international achievement came with the song "Jai Ho" from the Hollywood film Slumdog Millionaire (2008), also composed by A.R. Rahman. Sukhwinder was the principal vocalist on the track, which went on to win the Academy Award for Best Original Song and a Grammy Award for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media. This global success brought him international fame and cemented his status as a world-class artist.
